Acceptance March 2, 2010 for Fall 2010
quick Note* Current portfolio requirements have changed, I used the max allowed or requested at time of submission
Supplies Used: Prisma Color Markers and Prisma Color pencils overlapped
Fabric Swatches are from my own supply, however you can purchase swatches if you need them from MoodFabrics for around a dollar a swatch if you don't have access to a fabric store
Design Test They are looking at your ability to cross merchandise. Cross merchandising is when your looks connect season after season. Like Calvin Klein's minimalism and Alex Wang's urban androgyny. They want to make sure you know how to make things fit together.
Fashion Artwork Test This is designed to see if you can design a collection. I know people are tempted to throw all their 'greatest' hits in here but trust me. Give it some direction, and a theme. I would also advise you to run the gamut between day and evening looks, and DO sportswear.
Inspiration Test They are once again looking at how you can evolve an idea. It doesn't really have to be literal i.e. using a picture of a flower and designing the same flower as the dress. You can also only use the silhouette.
Garment Test All Done with Simplicity Patterns I bought at Walmart and thrift store fabric finds(HA!!)
Speaks for itself, can you sew? This is why my great portfolios got rejected. You really have to fire on all cylinders to get accepted. Keep in mind there is always someone else. You don't have to be a professional seamstress. Get some store bought patterns, practice and keep it neat. *Note I was told by current applicants that F.I.T. now wants the front and back photos on 1 image, you can do this with Photoshop, or if you don't have access to that program, you can use Photobucket. It's free, it's free and pretty easy to use.

this was helpful thank you
ReplyDeleteFIT asks for a " short written explanation " of each design. Can you provide an example if you have one?
ReplyDeletehi thanks for the information, i'd like to ask about some questions.. does the sketches have to use color copies (computer),is that ok if i draw manually without copying to computer? and i also confused about the fabric sample..do i have to attach the real fabric and scan into computer?
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, thanks so much for doing this website; its super useful!
I am just about to take photos of my garments, and was wondering if you think it would be ok to add a belt to the dress when I take a photo of my friend wearing it. It gives the dress a better fit on her and adds a nice dimension to the look.
Sure, it's just an accessory, go for it:) And thanks, glad to be of help. Good luck with your portfolio Alan!

I know that for the portfolio faces aren't required it's more of a nudge that you should but do you really have to?
ReplyDeleteWell if you think adding them will make your port look worse I say skip it
Deletethe clothes are whats important
Do you have any ideas for the new portfolio set up?
ReplyDeleteYou have to let me know what they changed
DeleteHi Rachel. I love your work! I am doing my portfolio but I was wondering if it is better to take the picture of my garments with in a white background or in a setting like a landscape or something like that? Which is your advice?
ReplyDeleteHi Paola, thanks!! Sorry for the lateness of my reply. I think either is up to you, but if you decide to use a landscape, make sure it isn't too busy. i.e. moving cars in the background etc. that may distract from your garment
Deletegood luck

ReplyDeleteHey Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI am thinking to apply for FIT and Parsons for fall of 2014-2015 in fashion design and is thinking to start on my portfolio for FIT now. I saw the portfolio requirements, but I don't know how to actually make the mood board. Is it ok if i can see your mood board?(: Thanks!
