Design Test

I will be uploading a tips and tricks for drawing soon. But just wanted to share the sketches from my design test I picked Spring in Tokyo Japan. The purpose of the design test is for F.I.T. to see your ability to merchandise, this is why you can only use a certain set of looks and you have to mix and match them. I hate the coloring on the first one, I remember being scared the marker would blur out the detail lol.

  1. Hi Rachel, So I just got my portfolio requirements last week and was wondering if the items you just posted were the ones you used when you applied and got in? I'm sure the design tests are different each semester. I have created a bodysuit as my "top" and am worried that they are looking for a shirt. After reading the instructions, I feel they are asking us to put one look (front or back) on a page, but I don't want to make a mistake by doing that if they are really looking for front and back and swatches on one sheet of paper (like what you have above). I'm driving myself crazy!!! Any info would be greatly appreciated! Oh, did you apply right out of high school? I'm concerned about GPA after reading posts of other people online. I graduated college with a 3.26 from UNC, a 3.0 from my community college and 3.0 from high school.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  2. hi!!
LOL no I did not apply right out of HS I am old:)
I wouldn't worry about your GPA. Just worry about making your portfolio the best it can be. GPA matters for the Fashion Merchandising major, not design. Yes all the sketches I posted here are from my accepted portfolio.
I applied more than once so I noticed the instructions didn't really change. The body suit shouldn't be a problem. To pull back on the confusion
they ask you to do two tops and two bottom and a jacket right.

    Sketch 1:
1st look, top + bottom (2 figures front back)

    Sketch 2:
2nd look top + bottom (2 figures front back)

    Sketch 3:
Alternate the tops and bottoms from the first 2 looks (2 figures front and back)

    Sketch 4:
Bring the jacket with one of the bottoms (2 figures front and back)

  3. I just got my portfolio instructions yesterday and the first part is really confusing. I am going to have to call the school up to get some clarification.

I had applied for fall 2011 but never finished the application, this new portfolio instructions packet is so different.

  7. I too found the first bit confusing. I can't tell whether they're asking for two outfit sketches or three? When I checked on the FIT facebook page, they just said, interpret it however. That didn't help much :/ Here is a copy paste of the instructions, how would you interpret this?:

"Draw three original garment designs in color using the medium of your choice. Show mix-and-match separates that work together. Design a jacket, a top (use the top twice, once on each figure), a pant and a skirt. On the mood page, tell us the destination and which season of the year is represented in each of the
designs. Sketch the designs in color on two figures. Include back views of the garments on a figure or as a flat sketch...

Note: For ePortfolio review, submit digital pictures of your mood page as well as the design sketches. Images submitted must be properly oriented (i.e. not upside down or sideways). See How To Submit Your ePortfolio: General Instructions. Name your mix-and-match design pages in order as follows:
yourlastname_1-1.jpg, yourlastname_1-2.jpg, yourlastname_1-3.jpg. Your file names should use all lowercase extensions. Also...include a short written explanation of how the designs have been inspired by the mood page image(s)."

  8. Okay wait a second... I think I might get it now. I think they're just including the mood page when they're listing off file order. Okay never mind sorry!

  9. Hi Rachel, i'm Ami and live in Tokyo. I'm now high school student and trying to apply for 2012 fall semester! I know I dont have enough time to make a nice portfolio, but at least I want to try. And I have some questions about portfolio req uirements, so if you don't mind tell me anything. It will be big help for me!
This is about "Mix and match designs". They said that-''Design a jacket, a top (use the top twice, once on each figure), a pant and a skirt". But I am not sure which parts should i match together and how many figures does must be drawn. I thought i need to draw 2 figures, one is figure with Jacket, Top and Pant, and the other with Jacket, Top and Skirt.
    Does it make sence?
I still don't understand how should I draw them.
Look forward to hearing from you, thank you!

    Ami

  10. Hi Ami, well applying for fall 2012 now is kind of cramming it, my advice would be to work on it now and apply for spring 13, but it's your choice of course.
This has changed a little bit since I applied,
    I would do
    1.jacket, top, pant,
    2. top, skirt
    3. jacket, skirt

    hope this helps!!
    good luck RC

  11. hey rachel, i don't really get it about color copies,FIT noted that the sketches must required color copies..is that mean that we have to draw manually then scan into computer after that print into color copies? thx

    1. Hi!
It's been a while, but I think it was a few days, I did them all in pencil first, then went over them with prisma color markers and color pencils

  13. Hi rachel quick question I am trying to apply for Fall 2012. do you think it is too late? I just started to do the portfolio and it is Feb 7th already. I feel overwhelmed please reply :)

    1. Sorry Emanda, but yeah, its waaayyyyyyy too late. At this point your options are, just take some classes for fall 2012 or apply for Spring 13, or apply to Parsons, if you have the money. I think Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising are F.I.T.'s most popular majors and they usually close early due to the volume

  16. Hi Rachel, I'm applying for Fall of next year to FIT, and I have this as my first choice and I really hope I could get in.
I had a question about this first part of the portfolio do, It says that your suppose to design a skirt, jacket, pants, and a top and mix and match them, but I'm not sure If I'm only to design one of each and combine them, or do I have the liberty of designing for example a skirt and pair it with a plain shirt, and design another top and pair it with the pants or another plain skirt apart from the skirt I want to design
I don't know I'f you understood what I'm trying to ask, but It would really help If you could clarify how exactly do they want it to be. Thank you so much

    1. I know i didn't right the blog but i'm pretty sure they want the shirt to be with the pants and the jacket and the skirt so that they see that you know how to mix and match items! :)

  19. Hello, I'm applying for Fall 2014 and I have some questions regarding the portfolio!
    The instruction says..
    1. Create a mood/inspiration page for the following mix-and-match designs. The mood page should include an image(s) that has inspired you to create these designs. Include a short written explanation of how the designs have been inspired by the mood page image(s). Also list the destination and season of the year that these designs will be worn in.
    2. Draw original garment designs in color using the medium of your choice. Show mix-and-match separates that work together.
    1) Design a jacket
    2) Design a top (use the top twice, once on each figure)
    3) Design a pant
    4) Design a skirt
Sketch the designs in color on two figures. Include back views of the garments on a figure or as a flat sketch.

Does it mean that I have to draw two human figures separately? I saw your work and got confused because u drew four figures.
    If I do
    1. Jacket, top, skirt
    2. top pants jacket
    am I doing right?!?

Also, for the design artworks, the instruction says

Draw original designs in color using the medium of your choice. Note original artwork can be computer generated. Design sketches are to be on full-length fashion figures with back views.

for each drawings, I drew one front figure and drew the back view as a flat design, not on a human figure.
Do you think its all right?

  20. Hello, I am planning to apply to Fall 2014 and I have few questions to ask you!
The mix and match instruction says:
Sketch the designs in color on two figures. Include back views of the garments on a figure or as a flat sketch
    1) Design a jacket
    2) Design a top (use the top twice, once on each figure
    3) Design a pant
    4) Design a skirt
I was confused because you drew four figures, not two (maybe the instruction was different than this year's? )

    I want to do
    1. Jacket + Top + skirt
    2. Jacket + Pants + Top
    Is that correct?

Also, for the other sketches, the instruction says:
Design sketches are to be on full-length fashion figures with back views

For each drawings, I drew one human figures for the front design and one flat design for the back view. Do you think it's okay?

Please reply me back when you read this message!
    Thank you!
