Hi guys, I plan to update within the next couple of weeks some essay tips. I also want to reformat my blog so that you have easier access to the information for each portion of your admission. It has been brought to my attention F.I.T. has changed its portfolio requirements, so if someone wouldn't mind emailing or posting it in the comments section it will be appreciated. Rachel

  1. I just wanted to let you know that I REALLY appreciate your blog! I plan to apply for the Fall 2012 semester. I REALLLLY want this I have some B&W sketches on my Facebook. If you would like to add me that would be at: Nathanshradr@gmail.com if not that's fine, you can access the album here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150493758684867.459623.591389866&type=3
Hope to hear from you soon! Much <3 -Nate xx

P.S. I haven't gotten the requirements yet but the actual FIT site says this:
    PART ONE: Design Test

    PROJECT ONE: MIX-AND-MATCH DESIGNS

Create a mood/inspiration page for the following mix-and-match designs. The mood page should include an image(s) that has inspired you to create these designs. Include a short written explanation of how the designs have been inspired by the mood page image(s).

Draw three (3) original garment designs in color using the medium of your choice. Show mix-and-match separates that work together. Design a jacket, a top (use the top twice, once on each figure), a pant and a skirt. On the mood page, tell us the destination and which season of the year is represented in each of the designs. Sketch the designs in color on two figures. Include back views of the garments on a figure or as a flat sketch. Attach fabric swatches and identify the fabrics on the front of the sketches.
NOTE: Original artwork can be computer generated.

    PROJECT TWO: FASHION DESIGN ARTWORK

Submit four sketches of your original fashion design artwork. Draw original designs in color using the medium of your choice. Design sketches are to be on full-length fashion figures with back views. Include 2 inch x 2 inch fabric swatches on the front of each sketch, identify the type of fabric (e.g. 100% wool gabardine).
NOTE: Original artwork can be computer generated. Include a short written explanation of the inspiration.

    PART TWO: Sewing Test

    PROJECT THREE: GARMENT SAMPLES

Submit three photographs of garments you have sewn (include front and back views). Samples are to demonstrate knowledge of construction. Originality, creativity, and design aesthetic are valued. Clothing is to be photographed on a person or dress mannequin. Garments can be created from commercial patterns or you can develop your own patterns or drape the design. Garment examples should be sewn. Do not show existing garments that have just been decorated.

    PART THREE: Written Essay

In 250 words or less, provide an example of when your point of view differed from a teacher or employer during an evaluation of your performance. How did you handle the situation?

  2. ok Nate, thanks I will def have a look. I see they shortened a lot of stuff and added the mood board (I think they ripped it off from Parsons)

I am glad you like the blog, I kind of wrestled with doing it but decided I should because I really wanted to help other students through the process. I am glad to be of help, and good luck to you

  3. Hey Rachel,
Well, I think I added one to many drawings to my fashion design test. The instructions were misleading because they said to create three garments, on two figures, and then tell you to create a pant, a jacket, a skirt and a shirt- 4 garments! Who knows what will happen? I turned everything in on Saturday of this past weekend and hope to get in for the Spring semester. How long did it take before you heard back? I'm trying not to get my hopes up. I doubt they accept very many people at all, much less for the spring semester...

  4. Well, don't get too down about it. As long as you know you did your best. Keep applying if you want it. I did.
I applied for fall, submitted my port dec 26 and got my acceptance via email March 2. I am guessing it will be shorter for spring though

    1. Hi Mari, what I would do is say you've never disagreed with a teacher, but explain how you would react if it did happen.

-note, 'have a mature reaction', lol
