Tips and Tricks (Updated with Sketches)

1. When doing the fashion artwork portion of the test. Do a mini collection instead of random dresses. If you are a particularly great sketcher, you can throw something in that doesn't go. But my advice would be to design a collection around that outfit.
Why? is what you might be asking. The reason is this. F.I.T. is primarily looking for students that can get jobs when they graduate, the more students that find jobs the more money they get from the state. I know that doesn't sound glamorous does it? Yet it's true. If you show them that you can focus your ideas, you get the edge.

Here's what I did for my portfolio. Excuse some of the coloring, it just goes to show you don't have to have a prefect portfolio to get excepted. The theme I chose was cocooning.

  1. I didn't even think to do my portfolio more like a collection. I just had random outfits to try and show them I can draw any and all types of fabrics.

  2. you can still do that(show your range), but just give it some type of focus, similar color, shape, so that it looks like it goes together.
For mine I picked cocooning since it was fall, most of the colors were tan and I did turtlenecks. But By the time I was done I was on a floor length off the shoulder evening gown. Because each outfit followed the theme but slowly progressed.

  5. Hi Rachel-
I'm so glad I found your blog! Thank you and congrats on getting in!
I was wondering how many sewing samples you submitted with your portfolio? I am not the best artist on the planet, but have a quite a lot of sewing skills and am hoping that will boost my less than amazing drawing skills. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

  6. Hi diana I submitted ten pictures(the max) and four looks total. We have the opposite problem as I felt I was a stronger artist than sewer. Stay tuned because I had planned on doing a new tips and tricks post concerning sketching.

  8. Hello Rachel,
I'm an international student applying to FIT next spring and I have a question about the instruction that i don't understand if you could please help me out. On the mood/inspiration part, i have to choose (a) picture(s) for the theme of the design and then make three outfits out of it, with front and back sketch, is that correct? I'm quite confused how to do this part. Thank you very much.

  9. Hi:)

For your inspiration test you only need to do two sketches, 1 for the front and 1 for the back.
you will attach the picture of your inspiration from the sketch. I guess F.I.T. does this to see how you can evolve an idea. My inspiration sketch is on the bottom of this page, its the purple top w/ black skirt, with the Kate Moss BW photo.
