On F.I.T.'s Portfoilio changes

I realize F.I.T. has changed some things since I applied, I did address it in the comments sections of some of the posts.
However, I can assume the bulk of it is still the same. If you have any questions though, leave it in the comments and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

  1. Hello again!

On FIT's portfolio instructions it says, "Submit photographs of a maximum of three garments you have sewn (include front and back views)." Do you think I could include 3 photos of full outfits (ie. 1. jacket + skirt 2. dress 3. shirt + pant), or should I stick to strictly 3 garments and photograph one garment at a time?

    Thanks!

  3. Hi Rachel!

Can you help me describe what Sportswear really means? In Sweden we don't have that expression. I'm the kind of girl who likes more of Alexander Wang, ACNE and Burberry Prorsum and wonder if Im way of my track if I apply for Sportswear FIT?

    Thank you!

  4. Hi Belpark,
yes you are on the right track, all those designers do sportswear.

wikipedia is more eloquent than I am:)----

    History of sportswear

Sportswear started out as a fashion industry term describing informal and interchangeable separates (i.e., blouses, shirts, skirts and shorts), but now describes clothing worn for a wide range of social events.[3] It was developed to cater to the needs of the increasingly fast-paced lifestyle of American women.[3] The early sportswear designers were associated with ready-to-wear manufacturers, rather than haute couture houses. The clothes were intended to be easy to care for, in easily washable fabrics, with accessible practical fastenings, to enable the modern, increasingly emancipated woman to dress herself without a maid's assistance.[4] While most fashions in America in the early 20th century were directly copied from Paris, designer sportswear was the exception to this rule, being an American invention.[4]

  6. Hi, I'm trying to apply for Fashion Design. I had taken a sewing class a few years ago & have forgotten how to sew well. I am extremely nervous about getting rejected....any suggestion on sewing projects that might be not as challenging?

    1. Hi Marina. I used home patterns for my garment test. Simplicity, McCall's ETC. I suggest you use classic full looks for your portfolio i.e. each photo has a top and bottom.
And when I say 'classic' I mean, a womans blazer with skirt.

  7. Hi Rachel!

Just like to say that this is a really resourceful page!

I'm an international student applying for the fabric styling program, I'm not sure if you can answer the question, but it doesnt hurt trying! Would you happen to know the requirement for that program, for an international student (or whether or not it's required). The school website didn't mention anything about a portfolio for international student expect WES (which my documents have been evaluated)

    1. hmm, If they don't mention anything about a portfolio, maybe you don't need one to enter the program. You can always try calling the department though, since they are open for summer courses.

    2. cool. thanks. i'll give them a call.

I've been to ny last month and even visited the school (even the department), but everyone was out for the summer. i was lucky enough to get someone and she gave me an email, so I'll definitely do that. thanks!

  8. Hi Rachel!
I'm going to applying for Fashion Design.
I've been worried about my essays and the portfolio.
Reading your blog make me feel better!Thank you so much!

actually I'm current a year 1 fashion student in ESMOD Beijing,
so I got some portfolio from my school work.
Do you have any suggestion for me in selecting the most suitable work for portfolio or should I create something new to FIT?
(because I already checked the time for national portfolio day, and I will not be able to attend...)
regarding the sewing part, I did sew some dresses and shirts,
some of them are my school assignments so that they dont really look good. And as a part of my final project this year, I completed 2 dresses for my collection(I sketched them and flat drawings are included), is it okay if I show it in the portfolio(since the max number is 3 garments)
omg I really got a lot of questions :'D
    Thank you so much Rachel<3<3<3

Anyways, My name is Jing, and apparently i'm too like millions of other people out there, trying to apply FIT. Anyways, even though I haven't totally finish my portfolio yet, i was wondering if by any chance that you could take look at what i have done so far, see if I'm heading towards the right direction, that would mean the whole world to me. Thank you very much for your time,
    Best.

  11. Hi Rachel!

I've been asking you questions here before but I have one more actually and I'm a bit worried.

I applied the first week of August and still waiting for the paper from FIT. SUNY said that they will send them 15th of September, do you possibly know if that is correct? Do they always wait like a month before they send out the info papers?

    Thank you!

    1. You mean your portfolio package? Honestly, I don't remember how long they took when I did mine, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. Are you applying for Spring 13?

      Delete
  12. oh, thank you, you answer so quick! :)

Yes, I'm applying for spring 13 and I still haven't got MyFIT account and all the portfolio requirements so I can continue my application at FIT. Maybe that's called the portfolio package, I dont know? Anyway, I emailed SUNY (because FIT haven't answered me yet and it's been a while now) and they said that they will arrive 15th of September for some reason? I turned to you for hope if you knew something but I just have to wait and see.
It's so frustrating to apply across the atlanta and not be able to just call and ask you know..
I have so many things to consider in this application with TOEFL and WES so everything has to be on time.

Thank you so much anyway for your quick response, it means a lot to me! thank you,
    / natali

  13. From FIT? No.. And I just have the original account at SUNYS where I can see all my applications. But nothing more.. and FIT is taking forever to answer! :( / Natali

  14. oh, they have contacted me now but they said in the mail that my username and password will be sent within next couple of weeks so I still haven't got the log in on MYFIT account. So, I guess I still have to wait.. thank you for your support anyway! ;)

  15. I am drawing a total blank on whether you need the student number to log in for the first time. If they activated it and you don't need it, but they just haven't sent it to you the log in for myFIT should be your name and your birth date for the password

    login: firstname_lastname
    password: DOB122000

    example:
    Sally Smith
    January 26 1991

    enter it as:
    sally_smith
    Jan261991

if it doesn't work they havent got you in the system yet. Let me know
